OK, let's start from the beginning, and make sure some PO didn't put the wrong-rotation starter on the engine. Why does this boat need two speedos? And why the carpet around the mufflers? Seems like engine wants to run smooth for a few seconds then when it chokes, or leans out, then when I go to crank it again it acts like no fire.

Distributor (prestolite) has tag that reads SAE J11171 (or something like that facing front or "bow".I'll put some pics up, something aint right.where should rotor be pointing when crank pulley is on 6 BTDC looking at it from the front? Also will post carb pic, want to know if it looks like orig or an "experiment" from previous owner. The rotor was pointing to 11 o'clock position looking at eng from the front. Then I removed cap, turned distributor a little to open points then set at. So here's procedure I used.I took out #1 plug, spun engine till cylinder "blew".then used wrench on crank bolt to bring around to 6 degrees BTDC. Prob is I still think I have timing off, need help in this area, not familiar with points at all, in high school I'd always take my hot rod to the old man down the road and let him deal with it and pay him with Schlitz beer. Then GM came out with HEI and he had to go back to lawn mower repairs. Last night I took starter off, it was froze up solid from sitting in bilge water.took it all apart, busted one of the long bolts so had to drill and use all thread to keep it together on one side. Filed points that were in it and set best I could.

Got belts for alt and pump after two trips to town, ugg, used old extension cord to get initial measurement. Took carb off, freed everything up, removed rear bowl, looked very clean, so left front alone. Ok, been working on it all day today, finally got it to run smoothly for around 15-20 seconds at a time.
